April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) states that driving while distracted (i.e. texting, talking on the phone, eating and other behaviors while driving) claimed 3,328 lives and caused an estimated 421,000 injuries in 2012. These numbers rise each year.

According to the NHTSA, distracted driving is "any activity that could divert a person's attention away from the primary task of driving." Distractions can be Visual - taking eyes off of the road; Manual - taking hands off the wheel; or Cognitive - taking the mind off driving. Driving while tired and/or not fully alert only adds to the distraction and danger.
